College Dorm Packing Essentials

Fall is just around the corner, so that means those of you going to college this year are just about ready to pack and leave for school! Packing for your freshman year in college can be quite stressful, especially if you’re going overseas. But there are a few essentials you should pack to make life a little easier when you get to college.

Here are a few tips and advice on packing for your freshman year.

Essentials

  • Medicine

You’re probably going to get sick at least once while you’re at college. And if you’re traveling far for your college, your parents are not going to be there to take care of you when you’re sick. So, make sure you pack medicine that you’re familiar with! Trust me, it’s not fun to have to go to the pharmacy when you have a bad flu. You don’t have to memorize all the medication you’re taking with you. You can always ask your parents to write down what each medicine is for so you don’t get confused.

  • Shower shoes and shower caddy

If you’re living in a dorm, you’re probably going to share a bathroom with someone else. Pack shower shoes, like flip flops or rubber slip ons, so your feet can stay clean going to and from the shower rooms.

A shower caddy is also very important so you can bring all your shower needs (soap, shampoo, etc.) to the shower room. Get a large enough shower caddy with a handle so you can easily carry it where you need to go!

  • Clothes for the weather and occasion

Make sure to research what the weather is like where your college is and pack accordingly. You don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe. Pack your favorite clothes. If you’re going somewhere cold, pack layer-able clothes. You can always buy a big puffer jacket when you get there to save space in your luggage. For now, focus on packing sweaters and hoodies, etc.

Don’t forget to pack a couple formal wear as well for any formal events, interviews, and presentations you may need to do in class!

Others

  • Photos , letters, other mementos

You might get homesick if you’re going to college that’s far from your family. Make sure to pack some photos and other decorations that can remind you of home and also make your new space feel comfortable.

  • Electronic devices

Make sure to pack all the devices you want to bring, including chargers and adaptors. Each country will have a different plug, so make sure you buy an adaptor if you need to so you can charge all your devices when you get there!

Getting an extension cord is also helpful so that you have more than enough outlets in your dorm to plug in your devices.

  • Pillows and bed sheets

You don’t necessarily have to pack your own pillows and bedsheets—you can always buy them when you get to college, but it can save you time. The first thing you want to do when you get to your dorm is to unpack, so it’s best to have everything washed and ready to be put on your beds. Also, if there is a certain kind of pillow or bedsheet you need to sleep with, then it’s better to pack those from home so you can sleep comfortably in your new space! Make sure to get the right size of bedsheets for your dorm bed (most college dorm beds are a Twin XL).
