HIGH RESOLUTION - LOW RESOLUTION

VIS 2122 • Architectural Geometry

Harvard GSD • Instructor: Iman Fayyad • Fall 2020 • in collaboration with Kristine Chung

This project uses a Klein surface to make an open outdoor theater structure with the secant and folded panelization methods. The single surface serves as an audience seating, a long span roof and the structural pillars. The intentional absence of panels accommodates the stage lighting fixtures.

 Klein Surface Formula

x(u,v) = (1 + cos(u/2)*sin(v) - sin(u/2)*sin(2*v))*cos(u)

y(u,v) = (1 + cos(u/2)*sin(v) - sin(u/2)*sin(2*v))*sin(u)

z(u,v) = sin(u/2)*sin(v) + cos(u/2)*sin(2*v)

where 0 < u < 2π and 0 < v < 2π
